The SMART Wall - The Best Way to Organize your Shop
Every woodworker knows the struggle. No matter how organized your shop starts out, tools somehow end up scattered across benches, shelves, drawers, and cabinets. Before long, you're spending more time looking for tools than actually building projects.
For years, I wanted a better solution.
The idea that eventually became what I call The SMART Wall had been floating around in my head for a long time. My goal was simple: create a mobile storage system that could hold the majority of my tools in one easy-to-access location while remaining flexible enough to adapt as my needs changed.
The inspiration came from the work of Ron Paulk and The Smart Woodshop. Ron coined the acronym SMART, which stands for Small Mobile Awesome Rolling Toolbox. I've been following his work since the early days of my woodworking business, and many of his organizational principles influenced this design.
Why I Built the SMART Wall
When designing this project, I wanted it to solve several common workshop problems:
1. Consolidate Tools Into One Location
Instead of storing tools throughout the shop, the SMART Wall brings everything together in one compact footprint.
2. Keep Frequently Used Tools Accessible
Tools are only useful when they're easy to grab and easy to put away. The open storage design makes it simple to maintain organization.
3. Create a Modular System
One of the biggest advantages of this design is its flexibility. Drawers, dividers, and tool storage sections can be rearranged to fit your specific tool collection.
4. Add Valuable Work Surface Space
The SMART Wall isn't just storage. It also provides a convenient work surface for tool setup.
5. Make It Mobile
With heavy-duty locking casters, the entire unit can be moved wherever it's needed in the shop and locked securely in place.
6. Keep Costs Reasonable
Storage hardware can get expensive fast. That's why this design uses almost no specialty hardware. Other than screws and casters, the entire system is built from plywood. Drawers and dividers ride in dados instead of expensive drawer slides, keeping costs low while maintaining durability.
Materials Required
The SMART Wall is built primarily from plywood:
5 Sheets of 3/4" (18mm) plywood
5 Sheets of 1/2" (12mm) plywood
1 Sheet of 1/4" (6mm) plywood
4" full-locking casters
1-1/4" pocket hole screws
1-1/4" countersink screws
Minimum Tools Needed
You don't need a fully equipped professional shop to build this project.
Required tools include:
Plunge router
Router pattern bushings
1/4" router bit
1/2" router bit
3/4" router bit
Circular saw
Recommended Tools
These tools will make the build significantly faster and easier:
Kreg Pocket Hole Jig
Track Saw
Table Saw
Miter Saw
The Paulk SMART Dado Jig deserves special mention. Even if you only build it for this project, it's worth the effort and will dramatically speed up cutting accurate dados.
